Life on Walnut Street

Brian and I live in an apartment on the infamous ("That means more than famous") Walnut St. aka "Seminary Row" to most GCC members. One person described it very well when she said "it's kind of like living in the midst of a circus". Let me explain what she meant by that.

Close your eyes and imagine yourself strolling down a neighborhood st. lined with apartment buildings and an occasional small house. As you stroll, Mariache music drifts out of the windows of homes that you pass. There's an older man pushing his umbrella covered cart selling ice cream cones or another with corn on the cob and little pin wheel looking things. All of a sudden you hear a loud "PING! that sounds an aweful lot like that of a submarine ping (which is what we "walnut streeters refer to it as) you turn and see it's the ice cream truck pulling up along side a curb to sell his sweets to the neighbor kids. You hear something else and you turn again, this time it's the first couple lines to the tune "La Cucaracha" being trumpeted by one of the vegetable trucks, packed with fruits, veggies, candy and random little toys, pulled over on the st. selling their merchandise to the local folk. By the way, do you know what "La Cucaracha" means? Care to guess?....It means "The Cockroach" (hmmm... make you wonder?;-) I've actually heard that those trucks are illegal, but they continue operating because no cop wants to pull them over and have to inventory everything in them. :) Shhh! You may also notice, as you stroll, groups of men lining the street hoping someone will come by that needs help with an odd job or two. And of course the mothers out on a stroll pushing her children in...a shopping cart?

Awhile back several of the apartment complexes put up brand new signs meant to encourage cars in the area to watch out for children darting around in the midst of their play. Brian and I had a pretty good chuckle as we pondered the mystery behind these signs. Who made them, and who bought them, and did anyone realize the major error?

Ahhh! Life on Walnut Street. It's definitely packed full of memories we won't soon forget!!

Wow! Where is this, Van Nuys? The next time you drive by the illegals looking for work yell out "INS!!" :)
